THE FABRIC

Why merino wool

01Moisture wicking

Merino wool moves sweat away from your skin as vapour and lets it evaporate from the fabric, so you stay dry and comfortable whether you are hiking, commuting or skiing.

02Odour resistant

Merino fibres naturally resist the bacteria that cause odour, so you can wear a base layer for several days, on the trail or while travelling, and it still smells fresh.

03Insulates when wet

Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet. In damp British weather it keeps insulating where cotton and polyester leave you cold.

04UV protection

Merino absorbs UV radiation: our lightweight layers offer UPF 25 and the midweight and heavyweight options UPF 50+, handy on long days in the hills.

05Flame resistant

Merino wool is naturally hard to ignite and self-extinguishes without melting onto the skin, unlike synthetic base layers.

06Renewable

Merino is a natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre. Sheep grow a new fleece every year, and a worn-out merino garment breaks down instead of shedding plastic microfibres.

FAQ

Merino socks, beanies & accessories: FAQ

What is this walking & hiking socks best for?

It is made for walking boots, hillwalking and everyday wear. Like all our merino, it stays warm when damp and resists odour, so you can wear it for longer between washes.

Are merino wool socks good for walking boots?

Yes. Merino hiking socks cushion your feet, wick sweat and keep insulating when damp, which helps reduce the moisture that leads to blisters on long days in boots.

Do merino socks keep feet warm in winter?

Yes. Merino traps warm air even when your feet sweat, so it keeps toes warmer than cotton socks in cold, wet conditions.

What size merino socks should I buy?

Choose your size from the size guide. If you are between two sizes, pick the larger size for boots and the smaller one for trainers.

What is a merino neck gaiter used for?

A neck gaiter (snood) can be worn as a neck warmer, face cover, headband or beanie, so it replaces several accessories for cycling, skiing, running and walking the dog on cold mornings.

How do I wash merino socks, beanies and boxers?

Turn them inside out and machine wash at 30°C on a wool or delicate cycle, then air-dry. Avoid tumble drying and fabric softener to keep them soft and in shape.

Great price, but hard to properly test ideal use case during the summer.

I really liked the price of these merino wool socks compared to your competitors, but I personally much prefer the feel of Bombas or the REI merino wool socks. Those brands tend to be a lot smoother and softer and less like a traditional scratchy wool sock. I followed the directions to wash them in cold water first before my first wear, and honestly, they didn't feel as bad on my feet as they did when I was handling them in my hands. However, they don't really have the elastic feel in them that keep them tightly bound to the foot like bomba's, for example, which usually helps avoid chafing during long walks. I haven't really torture tested them on a long hike in boots or something yet, but I assume they might be more willing to move around and slip around, which, along with their less soft feel, would be more likely to chafe. They are also obviously more meant for cold weather. At the moment in the summer, they are way too hot for me to wear outside in the heat, dispite merino wool being supposedly good in all weather. My bombas fare much better in the heat by comparison. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they work really well in the winter to keep the toes warm, but it is not winter yet so I have no way of testing that right now, unfortunately. It will be about 5 months or so until it will really get cold enough to test that. I mainly bought these socks for an upcoming japan trip during January, so they might be very useful then during the cold, but I'm worried I might not like them during winter after waiting months to use them in their main use case scenario. Maybe they will be too warm and my feet will still sweat and chafe? Maybe they wont be warm enough? Hard to say right now. Overall, I wont really be using these socks for a few months as of now before I can actually properly use them again. Not sure if I can return these by the time that happens though. I might wanna test out the bottom layers for merinotech undershirts or pants for travel though. Especially for things like skiing which I do every winter. One more thing is that I appreciate that they are just black, no fancy weird colours that I cannot match with any of my clothing (*cough* *cough* Darn Tough Socks *cough* *cough*) I really appreciate the low price above all. The competitors are making me pay like 20-30 dollars per pair and that's just crazy for a clothing item that I will need to change out each day.

Great product but too big

And socks cannot be returned or exchanged. Double and triple check sizes and then go conservative would be my recommendation to the customer.

To Merino my recommendation would be to illuminate this problem by making tube socks.

So I have worn many pairs of socks up through age 75 years. Have to say the Merino wool socks are the most comfortable and warm so far. Also weather has been exceptionally chilly the last2 weeks here in New England and these socks have kept my feet warm even with regular shoes.

Merino Wool Hiking Socks

I genuinely wanted to love these socks especially since they are priced well. However, this is a "you get what you paid for" situation. Being 15% polyester and 5% something else and only 80% wool, I see now makes a huge difference in how the sock feels on my foot. It has an itchy sensation to my skin. I will I could give you a glowing review but for myself, I see that I will need to still to 100% wool socks the next time.
