Which merino weight is right for you?
GSM is grams per square metre — how much fabric there is, not a warmth rating. Every weight is the same soft 17.5-micron Australian merino: it wicks sweat before it turns cold, insulates when it is cold and ventilates when it is warm. Lighter fabric breathes and dries faster; heavier fabric holds more heat when you stop moving. Choose by season and by how hard you will be working.

Why merino wool
Merino wool moves sweat away from your skin as vapour and lets it evaporate from the fabric, so you stay dry and comfortable whether you are hiking, commuting or skiing.
Merino fibres naturally resist the bacteria that cause odour, so you can wear a base layer for several days, on the trail or while travelling, and it still smells fresh.
Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet. In damp British weather it keeps insulating where cotton and polyester leave you cold.
Merino absorbs UV radiation: our lightweight layers offer UPF 25 and the midweight and heavyweight options UPF 50+, handy on long days in the hills.
Merino wool is naturally hard to ignite and self-extinguishes without melting onto the skin, unlike synthetic base layers.
Merino is a natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre. Sheep grow a new fleece every year, and a worn-out merino garment breaks down instead of shedding plastic microfibres.

Can I wear a merino base layer as an everyday top?

Is merino wool good for sensitive skin?
Our superfine 17.5-micron merino is soft and non-itchy, and many people who cannot wear ordinary wool find it comfortable next to the skin. It is also breathable, which helps avoid the clammy feel of synthetic thermals.
How do I wash a merino top?
Inside out at 30°C or lower on a wool or delicate cycle with a wool-safe detergent, no fabric softener, then dry flat or on a hanger. Do not tumble dry.
I absolutely love the style and colours of the long sleeved Nordic Tale Berry top and bought it specifically for layering for European travel. But only after a few wearings, it started to pill very noticeably and thus I'm not thrilled about the quality of the merino wool. I'm pretty sure that I didn't have a backpack rubbing against it, but it looks as if I did.

My purchase of this long sleeve Merino wool top, plus several other base layer pieces was specifically for an upcoming trip to Antarctica. I wasn’t expecting to need it in south Texas where I live. Unexpected winter storm with below freezing temps earlier in the month, gave me a great tryout opportunity. The merino base layers were perfect! I even wore the same pieces three days in a row to make sure they would not smell. Washed them by hand in cold water with a-bit of Woolite in a 2 gal. zip lock, out to dry.
And by the way the Nordic long sleeve top is super cute! No doubt they will work perfectly for Antartica.
